12/12, Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
A great sign appeared in the sky, a
woman clothed with the sun,
with the moon under her feet, and on her
head a crown of twelve stars.
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, also known as a "Holy Day of Obligation" in Texas (it's
guaranteed there will be more people at Mass today than on the Immaculate
Conception, which is good and bad). I
knew little about Our Lady of Guadalupe before last year. After seeing just how big a deal it was in
Houston, I figure I should learn more.
It is a fascinating story, particularly the rapidity of the spread of
the Church in Mexico after the apparitions.
Thousands of conversions each day.
No wonder she is the Patroness of the Americas. The symbolism contained in the image is
marvelous as well. But perhaps we need
to remember that, as she says, her importance is only to point us to her
son. It is right to love and honor Mary,
but we should always remember to do so only in the context of our love and
praise to Jesus.
